Driving and Road Safety

Driving and Road Safety

Mobile phones and Driving

Using a mobile phone while driving is dangerous and increases the risk of a road traffic collision. Taking your attention away from the road, even briefly, can have serious consequences.

Speed limits and speeding

By driving at just 5mph over the 30mph speed limit it takes you an extra 21 feet to stop.

Window Insurance Discs

It is an offence for any person to use or keep a motor vehicle on a road without displaying a valid Windscreen Insurance Disc.

Be Safe Be Seen

As the nights draw in, most of us will be travelling home in the dark. However you get to work or school, there are things you can do to help yourself be seen, making sure other road users can see you.

Driving Licences

To drive a car in Jersey you must be 17 years old (16 for mopeds 50cc and below) and you must have a valid driving licence, a current windscreen insurance disc and valid third party insurance, which covers your use of the car.

Road collisions

If you are involved in an accident that results in damage or injury, you must stop.

Motorbikes

Motorcyclists and moped riders must be 16 to ride a moped (50cc or below) and 17 to ride a light motorcycle and both must have a licence to ride on the road.

Seatbelts

The basic rules for adults are that every person in a motor vehicle sitting in the front or rear passenger seats must wear a seat belt if provided and available.
