COURT SENTENCING

Man sentenced for making indecent images of children

Today (Friday, 14 June 2024), 45-year-old Daniel AYLWARD was sentenced to two years and two months in prison by the Royal Court for three counts of making indecent images of children.

He was also handed a notification order for a period of five years, restrictive orders for four years and he must forfeit his phone for destruction.

AYLWARD was arrested in July 2023 after a warrant was executed at his home address under the Protection of Children Law Jersey.

Following his arrest, his digital devices were subject to examination by the Digital Forensics Unit. Based on their findings, on the 22nd of March 2024, AYLWARD was charged with three counts of making indecent images of children. The charges related to 218 Category A images, 307 Category B images and 624 Category C images.

During his first appearance within the Magistrate’s Court on the 11th of April 2024, AYLWARD pleaded guilty to all three counts and was remanded in custody awaiting sentencing.

Detective Sergeant Jim McGranahan from the Criminal Investigations Department said: “Protecting the public, and especially vulnerable children and adults in our island, is a main focus and priority for the States of Jersey Police.

“When people view and download images on their computers, then vulnerable children and people around the globe become the victims of exploitation. We will do whatever is in our power to bring offenders to justice and place them before the courts in Jersey, to safeguard those at home and abroad.”
