COURT VERDICT

Man convicted of sexual offence

Today (Thursday 5 September 2024), The Royal Court found 64-year-old Gordon James Burnett guilty of sexually touching a teenage girl at a party at a private residence, in the early hours of New Years Day. He has been remanded into custody and will be sentenced on the 18 October.

Burnett, a UK resident, had travelled to Jersey specifically for the party.  A short time after midnight, he accosted his victim, putting his arm around her and then putting his arm up her skirt and inside her underwear.  Burnett and the victim were unknown to each other. The victim disclosed this incident on the night and Burnett was arrested a short time later at his hotel.

Detective Constable Ben Casson from the Public Protection Unit said: “I wish to thank the victim in this case for her courage, resilience and determination to see this through.  At SOJP we recognise how hard it can be for victims to come forward and wish to reassure the public that we, and the services we work alongside, will do everything in our power to support victims of sexual abuse whether or not they wish to pursue a criminal case.”
