The purpose of the States of Jersey Police recording lost property is to reunite items handed in as found with the lawful owner. Lost property reports must only be created where they will assist this aim.

Taking in lost property isn't a statutory duty for the police. However, we do take reports and accept found property when it:

  • is believed to be related to a crime
  • poses a direct threat to the public
  • contains personal details relating to the owner.

Identity documents, wallets, purses or cash

Lost property - is the item identifiable?

If the item you have lost is identifiable, for example a driving licence, disabled parking permit (Blue Badge), bank card, UK passport, purse or wallet containing identification etc, we will not take a lost report for it. The reason for this is that if the item is found, we will be able to either reunite it with the owner or the appropriate agency because of the information held on that document. Having a lost report does not assist us in that process. Please report the loss to the issuing agency.

Jersey Driving licenses:

To obtain a replacement driving license you will need to contact your Parish Hall

Foreign passports / ID / Travel documentation:

These must be reported by the loser in person at a police station.

If you lose your Jersey passport you must report it to the local passport office:

Please note: Jersey passports that have been handed in to us as found will be returned to the local Passport Office.

Mobile phones, tablets, cameras etc

In respect of the loss of mobile phones you should ensure that you have notified your Airtime provider to block the device. Please see below for links to local mobile telephone providers:

Bicycles and vehicles

We will not record vehicles or bicycles as lost. The assumption by the States of Jersey Police is that these items are stolen and should be recorded as a crime. Please click here to use our online crime reporting form or call our non-emergency number 612612.

Keys, glasses, clothing etc

We do not take lost reports for any items such as keys, pens, glasses, clothing, jewellery etc.

If you have lost an item, we recommend you always retrace your steps and make enquiries in the area(s) it may have been misplaced. If the item was lost or found on private property or on public transport, then we recommend the following advice.

Often private organisations will have their own lost and found property services; this includes places such as shops, clubs, the airport, the harbour, gyms, places of work, Liberty Bus and large public events. If so, they are best placed to deal with the items and should be the first point of contact.

How do we dispose of items that are unclaimed?

The States of Jersey Police dispose of items that are either unclaimed or unreturned under the States of Jersey Police Force (Disposal of Property) (Jersey) Order 2016. Items will only be disposed of after three months and any proceeds from the disposal will be credited to the Annual Income of the States.
