Domestic & Sexual Abuse, Violence, Harassment and Stalking involving Police Officers or Staff

The States of Jersey Police (SoJP) is committed to transparency, accountability, and safeguarding our community. To support public trust, we are openly sharing the key principles of our Domestic Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Violence, Harassment and Stalking Involving Police Officers or Staff Policy.

Our Commitment

We take all reports involving police personnel seriously. This policy applies to every officer and member of staff, regardless of background.

Why This Policy Matters

This policy strengthens our commitment to the Code of Ethics and enhances public trust. It was developed as part of SOJP’s participation in the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Taskforce and our wider strategy to prevent harm. A copy of the Policy is available here.

SoJP aims to:

  • Support victims sensitively and take a traumainformed approach to anyone who discloses abuse.
  • Assess and manage risk, recognising that allegations involving police personnel may increase risks to victims and families.
  • Respond professionally and impartially to all incidents, following clear procedures and risk assessments.
  • Encourage reporting, including by colleagues, partners or family members, with confidentiality where needed.
  • Hold offenders accountable through both the criminal justice system and internal misconduct processes, while protecting victims and maintaining public confidence.
  • Safeguard investigations, ensuring Professional Standards are involved where police personnel are arrested or detained.

We also ensure victims receive reassurance, support, and signposting to specialist services.

Why We Introduced This Policy

Before implementing this formal policy, cases involving police officers or staff were managed through the Professional Standards Department with a common‑sense practices, ethical guidance, existing standards of conduct and in adherence with the law. However, following our involvement in the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Taskforce and the Police VAWG Strategy and Action Plan 2023, the need for clearer and more robust procedures became evident.

By introducing this policy, we strengthen our commitment to the Code of Ethics and reinforce the foundation of public trust on which effective policing relies.
