Our Commitment to Transparency: Conflict of Interest Policy Statement
Our Commitment to Transparency: Conflict of Interest Policy Statement
We are committed to serving our community with integrity, impartiality, and professionalism. To support this commitment, we have formalised a Conflict of Interest Policy that applies to all police officers working within the Force. Police Staff members are subject to the civil service conflicts of interest policy.
Why This Policy Matters
Trust between the police and the public is essential. Our community must have confidence that policing decisions are made impartially, free from personal, financial, or other external influences. The Conflict of Interest Policy helps ensure this by:
- Promoting transparency and accountability across the organisation.
- Ensuring officers recognise and appropriately report any actual, perceived, or potential conflicts of interest.
- Protecting the integrity of policing and supporting fair, unbiased decision‑making.
While police officers often have relationships, associations, and interests outside of their work – as all members of our community do – we acknowledge that sometimes these connections may create situations where impartiality could be questioned.
What the Policy Does
Sets out clear guidance for officers on:
- How to recognise a conflict of interest
- How and when to declare it
- The steps required to manage or remove that conflict appropriately
Importantly, the existence of a conflict of interest does not imply wrongdoing. Instead, it ensures that officers and the organisation can take the right steps to maintain public confidence and uphold the highest ethical standards.
The policy also provides a clear reporting route for members of the public who may have concerns. A copy of the Policy is available here.
Why We Introduced This Policy
Before implementing this formal policy, conflicts of interest were managed through common‑sense practices, ethical guidance, and existing standards of conduct. However, following our involvement in the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Taskforce and the Police VAWG Strategy and Action Plan 2023, the need for clearer and more robust procedures became evident.
By introducing this policy, we strengthen our commitment to the Code of Ethics and reinforce the foundation of public trust on which effective policing relies.
Building Public Confidence Together
We share this information openly because we believe that transparency builds trust. The Conflict of Interest Policy reflects our dedication to doing the right thing – upholding fairness, professionalism, and integrity at every level of the organisation.
